InPart Oneof this series, we covered some of the basic kinds of words and some basic parts of sentences. Now that we’re onto Part Two, let’s get into some more specific types of words, more complicated parts of sentences, and the names of the different verb tenses. Just like in the previous list, the first Dutch word is the international word and the second Dutch word is the word used by native Dutch speakers.
Types of Words
1. het direct object/het lijdend voorwerp: the direct object
Ik gaf hemgeld.
-I gave himmoney.
2. het indirect object/het meewerkend voorwerp : the indirect object
Ik gafhemgeld.
-I gavehimmoney.
3. het participium perfecti/het voltooid deelwoord : the past participle
Ik heb in het parkgefietst.
-I havecycledin the park.
4. het participium praesentis/het tegenwoordig deelwoord : the present participle – the gerund
Omhoogkijkend, liep de man tegen de lantarenpaal.
–Lookingup, the man walked into the streetlight.
5. het pronomen personale/het persoonlijk voornaamwoord : the personal pronoun
Ikben een student enikwerk bij een restaurant.
–Iam a student andIwork in a restaurant.
6. het demonstratief pronomen/het aanwijzend voornaamwoord : the demonstrative pronoun
Ik vinddithuis mooier dandathuis.
-I findthishouse prettier thanthathouse.
Dezeboeken zijn heel interessant.
–Thesebooks are very interesting.
7. het possessief pronomen/het bezittelijk voornaamwoord : the possessive pronoun
Mijnfiets is sneller danjouwfiets.
–Mybicycle is faster thanyourbicycle.
8. het relatief pronomen/het betrekkelijk voornaamwoord : the relative pronoun
Deze kinderen,dieijs eten, zijn mijn neefjes.
-These children,who/thateat ice cream, are my nephews.
9. het reflexief pronomen/het wederkerend voornaamwoord : the reflexive pronoun
Ik herinnermemijn jeugd.
-I remember my youth.
10.het interrogatief pronomen / het vragend voornaamwoord : the interrogative/question pronoun
Waarwil je eten?
-Where do you want to eat?
Watis je naam?
-What is your name?
Parts of Sentences
1. de hoofdzin : main clause
Ik ben heel moe vanavondmaarik wil nog steeds naar het feestje gaan.
-I am very tired tonight, but I still want to go to the party.
Ik denkdat hij een aardige man is.
–I thinkthat he is a nice man.
2. de bijzin : subordinate (dependent) clause
Ik denkdat hij een aardige man is.
-I thinkthat he is a nice man.
Basic Verb Tenses and Conjugation Terms
1. de presens/de onvoltooid tegenwoordige tijd : the present tense
Ik woon in Amsterdam.
-I live in Amsterdam.
2. het perfectum/de voltooid tegenwoordige tijd : the present perfect tense
Ik heb in Amsterdam gewoond.
-I have lived in Amsterdam.
3. het imperfectum/de onvoltooid verleden tijd : imperfect/simple past tense
Ik woonde in Amsterdam.
-I lived in Amsterdam.
3. future : this isn’t an actual tense in Dutch, but there are a multitude of ways you can express a future action.
Ik ga in Amsterdam wonen.
-I am going to live in Amsterdam.
Ik zal dat doen.
-I shall do that.
注意:这不是不寻常的使用动词zullen, which directly translates as “shall.” This sounds unusually formal in English, but is not always so formal in Dutch.
enkelvoud : singular
meervoud : plural
eerste persoon : first person
tweede persoon : second person
derde persoon : third person
Now, this list is by no means complete, but it should give you a good basis for studying the most structurally important parts of Dutch grammar that you will encounter. And just like in Part One of this series, I challenge you to pick out a Dutch newspaper online and have a go at labeling the different parts of sentences. Maybe ‘zich herinneren’ is not the best example of a reflexive pronoun since in English it’s not reflexive: ‘to remember’, not ‘to remember oneself’. I suggest ‘zich vermaken’.
Ik vermaak mij in het park.
-I enjoy myself in the park.
